Background of the Study
Drought is a recurrent natural hazard that severely impacts socio-economic development, particularly in rural communities that rely on agriculture and natural resources. In Irepo Local Government Area, Oyo State, prolonged periods of drought have led to reduced crop yields, loss of livestock, and a decline in household incomes (Adeniran, 2023). These conditions have heightened food insecurity and forced communities to adopt various coping strategies. Economic instability, coupled with increased migration from rural to urban areas, further compounds the socio-economic challenges faced by these communities (Folarin, 2024). The interplay between environmental stress and socio-economic hardship demands a comprehensive assessment to inform effective policy responses. This study examines the multi-faceted impact of drought on rural livelihoods, exploring both direct economic losses and broader social consequences. It also evaluates the resilience mechanisms employed by affected communities and the role of governmental and non-governmental interventions in mitigating adverse outcomes (Adeniran, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Rural communities in Irepo face significant socio-economic challenges due to recurrent drought, which has resulted in declining agricultural productivity and increased poverty levels. The lack of adequate drought mitigation strategies and support systems exacerbates these issues, leading to long-term socio-economic instability (Folarin, 2024). This study aims to identify the key impacts of drought on rural livelihoods, understand the coping mechanisms in place, and evaluate the effectiveness of existing interventions, highlighting the urgent need for improved policy and community support.
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the socio-economic impacts of drought on rural communities.
To examine coping and resilience strategies adopted by affected households.
To propose policy interventions to alleviate drought-induced hardships.
Research Questions:
What are the socio-economic impacts of drought in Irepo?
How do rural communities cope with prolonged drought conditions?
What policy measures can mitigate the adverse effects of drought?
Research Hypotheses:
H1: Drought significantly reduces agricultural productivity in rural communities.
H2: Current coping strategies are insufficient to counteract the socio-economic impacts of drought.
H3: Targeted policy interventions will improve community resilience.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides an in-depth analysis of the socio-economic consequences of drought on rural livelihoods. The findings will inform policymakers and development agencies, guiding the creation of effective support mechanisms and resilience strategies to mitigate drought impacts (Adeniran, 2023; Folarin, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the socio-economic impact of drought on rural communities in Irepo Local Government Area, Oyo State. The study excludes impacts in urban areas or other environmental factors.
Definitions of Terms:
Drought: A prolonged period of deficient rainfall leading to water scarcity.
Socio-economic Impact: The effect of an event on the economic and social well-being of a community.
Resilience: The ability of a community to recover from environmental or economic shocks.
